Dr. Michael Wood is board certified with the American Board of Surgery and has over 25 years of surgical experience and an extensive background in weight loss surgery and advanced laparoscopic procedures.
Currently, Dr. Wood is the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgical Services at Harper University Hospital. He has performed over 5,000 weight loss surgical procedures and has devoted a large portion of his medical career to the study and treatment of obesity and weight loss strategies. His clinical interests include Minimally Invasive Surgery, laparoscopic/robotic and open Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, laparoscopic/robotic sleeve gastrectomy, robotic duodenal switch and laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (Lap Band and REALIZE Banding Solutions).
He is an active member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Michigan State Medical Society, and Wayne County Medical Society, and he is recognized as a Bariatric Surgeon of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC).
Dr. Michael Wood has held several faculty and professional appointments throughout his medical career, and is currently Clinical Professor of Surgery, Wayne State University School of Medicine and co-chair of the surgical committee.
Dr. Wood has authored many articles related to obesity and bariatric surgery procedures. He has a passion for treating obesity and its disease processes, including physiological considerations, dietary factors in gastrointestinal disease and strategies in prevention. Dr. Michael Wood was involved in grant-funded research studying the effect of endogenous opiates on gastric acid secretion. He is also the co-inventor of the patented Sapala-Wood Micropouch® gastric bypass procedure. His most recent project, in collaboration with the Division of Endocrinology at Wayne State University, is the study of differential gene expression of inflammatory cytokines in the fat cell.
