Choosing the Weight Loss Surgery that's Right for You

Are you interested in bariatric surgery but feel stumped by the question ‘Which bariatric surgery is right for me?’ If so, let our experts help you determine the bariatric surgery that is right for you.

The bariatric surgery experts at Your New Self perform most types of weight loss surgery – from Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (or Gastric Sleeve) to adjustable LAP-BAND® procedures. But how do you choose the one that’s right for you?

“Each procedure has its own pros and cons,” said Steven Hendrick, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board-certified surgeon specializing in weight loss surgery at Harper BMI. “So choosing a procedure really depends on the individual patient’s goals, their lifestyle and habits and, of course, their previous medical history.”

Dr. Hendrick and his fellow surgeons at Your New Self work closely with patients to help them select the procedure that will be medically appropriate and most likely to help them achieve their weight loss goals. They encourage patients to ask questions beyond ‘which bariatric surgery is right for me?’, do their own research, and understand what’s involved in each surgical procedure before making a decision.

We want patients to make an educated decision and give it some real thought,” Dr. Hendrick said. “What we don’t want is a patient choosing a certain type of procedure because they saw it advertised somewhere or because their neighbor’s uncle had it done.”

Depending on the individual patient, any of the following surgical procedures might be appropriate:

  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass – This is the most frequently performed weight loss operation in the United States and is considered to be the current gold standard procedure for weight loss surgery according to the American Society for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery and the National Institutes of Health. The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a combined “restrictive” and “malabsorptive” weight loss operation. The stomach is divided creating a pouch approximately the size of a Dixie cup. Then the small intestine is cut and attached to the pouch, bypassing part of the small intestine and stomach. This affects the body’s ability to absorb all the ingested nutrients and calories.

  • Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (or Gastric Sleeve) – The Gastric Sleeve procedure is only performed by a limited number of surgeons worldwide, including three surgeons at Your New Self. It is an operation in which the left side of the stomach is surgically removed, resulting in a new stomach which is roughly the size and shape of a banana. Since this operation does not require any “rerouting” or reconnecting of the intestines, it is a simpler operation than the gastric bypass. Unlike the LAP-BAND® procedure, the sleeve gastrectomy does not require the implantation of an artificial device inside the abdomen.

  • LAP-BAND® The LAP-BAND® is a restrictive operation used for weight loss. The LAP-BAND® is made of silicone and is placed around the stomach near the upper end, creating a small upper pouch and a narrow passage into the larger lower portion of the stomach. The effect of the inflatable band is to trick your body’s hunger drive into thinking that you are full. The LAP-BAND® has an adjustable inner-collar that can be inflated or deflated by your physician depending on a number of factors.
