"It's called breakfast for a reason," said Rachel Roberts, a registered dietician at Harper BMI in Southfield. "It literally means to 'break the fast.'" Your metabolism - the rate at which you burn calories - slows down when you sleep and it doesn't pick back up until you eat again after waking. So if you want to burn more calories during the day, Rachel and other dieticians recommend eating a healthy, metabolism boosting breakfast within 60 to 90 minutes of waking.

"The worst thing you can do is skip breakfast, but so many of us do it," Rachel said. "When we skip breakfast, we're not only slowing down our metabolisms, we're also setting ourselves up for uncontrollable hunger and cravings later in the day."

In other words, skipping breakfast often leads us to make poor snacking and mealtime decisions later in the day.

Eating a healthy, metabolism boosting breakfast is especially important after bariatric surgery. "Getting sufficient protein is crucial to your overall health and weight loss, so always eat your protein first at mealtime. You don't want to fill your stomach pouch with other types of food and leave no room for protein." Generally, you'll want to start your meal with protein, followed by non-starchy vegetables. Carbohydrates like fruit and whole grains should come last.

Of course, we have many excuses for skipping breakfast. Some people just aren't hungry when they wake up, especially people who've had bariatric surgery. Some people mistakenly believe skipping a meal will help them lose weight. People who work nights often sleep through the morning and wake after lunch time.

"It doesn't matter when you eat your breakfast - it could be 8 in the morning or 3 in the afternoon," Rachel said. "What's important is that you are eating a balanced, healthy meal and meeting your body's protein requirements within 60 to 90 minutes of waking up."

What's on the Menu?

Don't like traditional breakfast foods? Don't worry. You have plenty of healthy options for a metabolism boosting breakfast.

  • Make a smoothie with soy or whey protein or grab a pre-packaged protein shake.
  • Eat a hard-boiled egg along with a non-starchy vegetable.
  • Wrap a few slices of deli turkey around a stick of low-fat string cheese.
  • Dig into last night's healthy leftovers.
  • Give low-fat Greek yogurt a try; it's tasty and has about twice the protein of traditional yogurt.
