Weight Loss Often Leads to Significant Health Improvements

For most of us, losing weight isn’t about fitting into a smaller dress or pant size. Men and women who are obese have a higher risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, asthma, depression and other serious health problems. Weight management is not merely a matter of fashion and appearance — it’s a matter of health and wellness. There are so many health benefits of weight loss.

“People want to lose weight for many reasons,” said Taghreed Almahmeed, M.D., a board-certified General Surgeon who recently joined the Harper BMI team. “Sometimes they want to be able to keep up with their children or grandchildren. Sometimes they are worried about fitting in a seat on an airplane.”

Whatever your reason for wanting to lose weight, you’ll likely enjoy a variety of the health benefits of weight loss when you start shedding pounds.  “One of the most significant improvements we see is in the reduction of diabetes,” Dr. Almahmeed said. “It’s not uncommon to see patients who no longer need to take diabetes medications after they’ve had bariatric surgery and lost weight.”  Most patients have increased energy levels and better moods after they start losing weight, which usually leads to increased activity and better overall health.  “With the loss of weight, their mobility improves and they are able to exercise more and they start feeling better about themselves,” Dr. Almahmeed said.

Other health benefits of weight loss can occur as quickly as four months after bariatric surgery, including:

·         Reduced obstructive sleep apnea and reduced need to use a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device during sleep

·         Lower cholesterol levels and reduced need to use cholesterol-lowering medications

·         Lower blood pressure levels

·         Reduced asthma

·         Fewer musculoskeletal problems

“We often see improvement or complete resolution of joint pain when a patient starts losing weight,” Dr. Almahmeed said. “This occurs most often in the weight bearing joints like the ankles and knees.”  And once that joint pain disappears, it becomes even easier to get active and maintain a healthy weight.
