Surgery Procedures

Making the choice to lose weight through bariatric surgery is a big decision. Bariatric surgery can lead to amazing changes that you will endure throughout the remainder of your life. Providing weight loss assistance while reducing the risk of obesity-related illnesses, weight loss surgery has offered a new lease on life to hundreds of thousands of individuals.

Bariatric surgery procedures are all useful for losing weight, but not all surgeries are right for everyone. At Your New Self, we are pleased to offer three distinct procedures designed to accommodate your body and your needs. With pros and cons related to procedural details, average weight loss, required dietary changes, and more, there is a lot of information to review before making a decision. To learn more, please watch the videos below that provide information on each of our available bariatric procedures.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass is the procedure most patients think of when they envision weight loss surgery. In use since the 1960s, gastric bypass was a big part of the development of the field of modern bariatrics medicine.

In a gastric bypass procedure, a portion of the small intestine is bypassed to connect to the top of the stomach. In essence, the size of the stomach is reduced and the digestive tract is rerouted to reduce appetite and minimize the amount of food that can be consumed at one time. Due to the changes within the body, specialized post-surgical diets must be carefully followed in order to prevent dumping syndrome, an unpleasant side effect that can cause nausea and vomiting.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

A sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve procedure, is another variation of weight loss surgery. Instead of rerouting the digestive tract, a sleeve gastrectomy involves removing a large portion of the stomach. This leaves behind a small sleeve roughly the size and shape of a banana, effective controlling appetite and reducing possible portion sizes. Due to the nature of this process, reversal is not an option.

The gastric sleeve process can stand alone or be used in conjunction with other procedures. For example, extremely obese individuals may first undergo a sleeve gastrectomy and, after adequate weight loss, have a subsequent gastric bypass.

LAP-BAND Adjustable Gastric Band Procedure

The LAP-BAND procedure provides a simple and effective way to reduce the size of the stomach without major surgical changes.

In a LAP-BAND surgery, a band is fitted around the top portion of the stomach that can be inflated with a saline solution, creating a small upper chamber above and a larger lower chamber below. A port is then connected to the wall of the stomach for use in adjusting the band as necessary. This process is often handled laparoscopically to accelerate recovery and minimize changes to the body.

ORBERA Gastric Balloon

A non-surgical alternative to weight loss surgery, the ORBERA gastric balloon is a medical device that can stimulate weight loss in a safe, efficient manner. Inserted into the stomach through the mouth and inflated with saline, this unique balloon remains in place for six months to curb appetite and help patients maintain healthy dietary habits.
